Releasing a dive watch was the logical next step for Vaer founders Reagan Cook and Ryan Torres. Both surfers, they spend much of their free time in and around the ocean and wanted a watch that was ready for both swimming and diving. The result is the D5 - a handsome, rugged, and affordable dive watch that is water-resistant to 200m. Drawing inspiration from vintage dive watches while using modern manufacturing and materials, the D5 from Vaer blends the best of both worlds.

Housing the D5 is a stainless steel case that measures in at a very wearable 39mm wide by 48mm lug-to-lug. The double domed sapphire crystal up top brings the thickness of the case to 13.7mm, even though it feels slimmer on the wrist. You’ll notice that the twisted lugs wind inwards to the bracelet’s end link, while also curving downwards to hug the wrist. Vaer’s founders wanted an ocean-ready watch that is comfortable enough to wear during activity, and the inwards slanting mid-case and curved lugs help the D5 achieve this goal. Up top, a rotating bezel tracks elapsed time, while a SuperLuminova-treated dial makes it easy to read in both light and dark conditions.

Inside the D5, there’s the reliable Miyota 9015 automatic movement. It beats at 28,800 bph for a smooth seconds hand sweep with 24 jewels inside keeping everything lubricated. When fully wound, the movement will run for a full 40 hours. Hacking seconds and the ability to hand-wind make precision time setting a breeze on this vintage-inspired diver.

About Vaer

Vaer was founded in 2016 by Ryan Torres and Reagan Cook, the Venice, California-based duo wanted watches that represented who they were. They weren’t buying luxury watches, but they didn’t want low quality either, and they needed to be durable. So, they put their life savings on the line and launched. After some quick success, Vaer expanded their catalog of tough everyday sport watches into some interesting directions. Now, they offer a mix of Asian, American, and Swiss assembly at different prices, as well as quartz and automatic movements.
