For fans of sleek and minimalist designs, Junghans should need no introduction. The brand has been making watches and clocks since the 1860s, and it’s the watches produced in the middle of the last century that typify Junghans’s mastery of Bauhaus design. We’ve been offering Junghans in the Shop for quite some time, but now we’re pleased to offer a vintage example of one of our favorite Junghans models: the Meister.
First launched in the 1930s, the Meister was developed to showcase the brand’s technical achievements. Dating from the 1960s, this example (complete with its original strap and buckle) encapsulates all the restrained elegance of Bauhaus design. At 35mm the unpolished gold-plated case possesses an airy thinness, achieved by a manually-wound mechanical movement, but it certainly doesn’t lack in presence.
The watch’s most interesting feature is the long thin painted-on markers that, with the aid of the domed crystal, seem to extend past the edges of the dial. It’s touches like these that make this watch a pleasure to look at.
