Prior to the Second World War, Omega was best known for elegant Art Deco three-hand watches powered by chronometer grade movements. But the War saw a sea change in the manufacture’s output as production shifted toward outfitting the armed forces. The watches on the wrists of these soldiers were powered by the Calibre 30T2, which was known both for its accuracy as well as the brutal elegance of its design.

Once the War had ended, Omega adapted the design principles it employed in the making of its military watches and applied it toward watches destined for the civilian market. These watches featured slim stainless steel cases; stalwart yet simple movements derived from the Calibre 30T2; and an array of dial and hand configurations dominated by a sub-seconds register at 6 o’clock.

This watch is a Reference 2639-4 dating from the 1960s. It features a silver dial with applied stick markers and dauphine hands. The sub-seconds register, a simple crosshatch from which the seconds hand emerges, gives the watch an elegant mid-century touch. Powering it is the Calibre 265 manually-wound movement, one of the many children of the 30T2. It’s housed in an unpolished 35.5mm stainless steel case that with its twisted lugs evokes another famous Omega case design of the period, the Speedmaster.
