Looking for a modern watch that carries a historic pedigree, but don’t want to spend thousands? You have more options than you think! If it’s a military field watch you’re going for, fewer names have more historical gravitas than Waltham, the storied American brand responsible for the creation of the first mass-produced mechanical watches. Now boasting Swiss production and modern milspec standards of precision, here’s what you need to know about the rugged, reliable, and most importantly, affordable Waltham A17 Pilot.

While the watch world isn’t short on military watches, few have the genuine history to back up the beefy specs. Not so with the Waltham A17 Pilot Collection, which carries a legacy dating back to the late 1940s: the original A17 held MIL-W-6433 specification and was issued to the U.S. Air Force in the early years of the Cold War. 73 years later, Waltham brought it back with upgraded specifications and modern build quality and dimensions, but with the same mid-century ruggedness that made the original a trusted icon.

Waltham’s military and exploration roots span the majority of their 174 years of existence, with American, British, and Canadian governments using their timepieces and instruments for expeditions in the early 1900s, and for their armed forces through the first and second World Wars. Waltham’s image as the first industrial watchmaker and an innovator in the transition from pocket watches to wrist-worn “trench watches, waterproof and high-heat resistant watches, and other extreme use cases, made their pieces a sensible pick as standard issue for decades of American military use, even after establishing Waltham SA in Switzerland in 1954 in order to keep up with the rapidly-evolving watch market.

That brings us to 2023, when Waltham re-introduced the iconic A17 Pilot Watch for contemporary standards. A completely faithful revival of that original A17, the modern iteration bears fully lumed numerals and a 24-hour inner track for maximum legibility and cockpit functionality, powered by a Swiss-made Soprod M100 automatic movement. For historical accuracy, the A17 omits the day-date function, opting instead for a clean dial design, paired with a compact but modern 40mm case. The domed sapphire crystal keeps the look vintage, and the screw-down crown helps secure 100 meters of water resistance, giving the A17 true adventure watch status.

Several colorways and strap options are available for the A17, with black and silver case finishes, and black, blue, or green dial options. We’ve chosen the green dial on a green Cordura strap for the ultimate historically-accurate but functionally contemporary look. If you’re a history buff, a military watch enthusiast, or just someone who likes adventure, be it on land, in the sky, or anywhere else life takes you, the Waltham A17 Pilot may be just the watch for you.
