The evolution of Marathon's Canadian Search and Rescue Watch
Founded in 1939, Marathon has been supplying the US and Canadian governments with accurate timepieces since World War II. In 2001, they launched their now-iconic Search and Rescue dive watch in response to the Canadian Armed Forces requesting a watch that could withstand the intense conditions faced by the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Search and Rescue Technicians. Now, Marathon has brought back the Search and Rescue that started it all — with a few improvements.
Large Diver's Automatic (GSAR Auto)
Designed in Canada and manufactured in Switzerland, Marathon watches are designed to meet some of the toughest MIL-SPEC standards out there. The GSAR (Government Search and Rescue) diver’s watch is made for divers and search and rescue teams who regularly face the toughest of elements. The standard that defined the specs of the GSAR watch was born out of military necessity, but it’s just as useful as a civilian as it is for an active duty member. The watch is a chunky, yet wearable diver with a reliable Sellita SW200 Swiss automatic movement, housed in a durable 316L stainless steel case with a no-nonsense military vibe that values function over form. It’s built to ISO 6425 diver’s standards, which require 300m of water resistance, and a myriad of other high-stress requirements.
A Classic Finally Comes in Steel
And now, after years of requests from fans of the brand, the Navigator finally comes in a 41mm asymmetrical matte stainless steel with a 41mm asymmetrical case. The crown is now screw down, allowing a bump in water resistance from 60m to 100m. It still features a bi-directional 12-hr bezel for tracking a second timezone while remaining 13mm thick. It features a matte steel push/pull crown at the 3 o’clock position that nestles in the case side, and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal up top.
