Seiko has been focusing on incorporating GMT complications into their entry-level products, with the Seiko 5 sports line introducing a GMT movement last year. The Prospex line already has models with a fourth hand for time zone changes. In a continued push to expand the GMT offerings, Seiko recently announced the Prospex Solar Sumo GMT Divers.

This collection brings forward a new dial with a new 24hr track showcasing the GMT functionality of the watch. While a subtle wave texture on the dial as well as a large diving bezel instantly reminds you that this watch still has diving capabilities. The case, affectionately called the Sumo, has a super-hard coating and measures 45mm in width and 13.2mm in thickness. Water resistance is a dive-ready 200 meters. All this secured to your wrist with a durable steel bracelet with a locking three-fold clasp and a dive extension.

For the Prospex Solar Sumo GMT Divers, Seiko uses the 5K65 solar quartz movement which has an independently adjustable 12-hour hand and a date function. Which means the watch is considered a "True" or "Flyer" GMT. In terms of specifications, the movement is rated for +/- 15 seconds per month and contains 3 jewels.

Although using a solar quartz movement instead of a mechanical movement may take some getting used to, it offers the convenience of better time keeping and eliminates the need to frequently opening up a dive watch to change batteries.

About Seiko

Founded in 1881, Seiko began as a humble jewelry and clock store and has since grown into the watchmaking juggernaut that it is today. If the technology for a watch they wanted to make didn’t exist, Seiko made it happen under their own roof. Since Seiko is vertically integrated, they can customize nearly any part of their watches to their own design and specs in house. From the first true dive watch, to one of the first automatic chronographs, and completely new ways of powering a watch like Spring Drive, Seiko’s list of horological achievements is lengthy. They’ve done everything all the way down to creating their own lab-grown and regulated quartz crystals for timekeeping.
