Seiko watches, in some form or fashion, have always represented a few core values among enthusiasts: dependability, style, and affordability. Those pillars have come to define what makes Seiko so popular both then and now. The long-time so-called “entry level” Seiko watches have historically belonged to the Seiko 5 line. While what the “5” stands for is up for some debate, it is generally accepted to signify: 1) waterproof case 2) recessed crown at 4 o’clock for comfort 3) automatic movement 4) date and day display 5) durable bracelet and case. The SPRK17 checks each of those boxes and does so in its own unique, 1970s-inspired way to celebrate Seiko 5’s 55th birthday.

The SPRK17 features a tonneau-shaped case straight out of the archives: it is 39.5mm, 43.1mm lug to lug, and 12.5mm thick – dimensions that make for a very wearable watch on a wide range of wrists. On it sits a scalloped bezel with minute hashes and markers in 5-minute increments, useful for tracking time. The dial is black with a white outer minute track and features the old-school Seiko 5 and Seiko Sports logo, touches that add to the nostalgic appeal of the watch. The red second hand adds some welcome color and contrast. The bracelet is also vintage-inspired and seamlessly integrates into the lugs by tucking under the case, helping the watch to wear even more compactly than its dimensions suggest. The three-part clasp is signed by the brand and uses a button clasp system.

Inside the SPRK17 is the Seiko 4R36, a movement that is both automatically and manually wound. It, like every Seiko movement, is manufactured entirely in-house and offers 41 hours of power reserve while beating at 21,600 VPH. It features day and date complications and hacking seconds for good measure. As is almost invariably the case with Seiko calibers, the 4R36 is a simple but reliable movement that is fitting for the Seiko 5 nameplate.

About Seiko

Founded in 1881, Seiko began as a humble jewelry and clock store and has since grown into the watchmaking juggernaut that it is today. If the technology for a watch they wanted to make didn’t exist, Seiko made it happen under their own roof. Since Seiko is vertically integrated, they can customize nearly any part of their watches to their own design and specs in house. From the first true dive watch, to one of the first automatic chronographs, and completely new ways of powering a watch like Spring Drive, Seiko’s list of horological achievements is lengthy. They’ve done everything all the way down to creating their own lab-grown and regulated quartz crystals for timekeeping.
