Locker combos, first-period alarms, homework deadlines — back to school season runs on time management, whether your kid wants to admit it or not. It's also one of the few times of year when a watch, a clock, or a great everyday carry piece isn't just a nice-to-have, it's genuinely useful. A mechanical watch teaches a kid to actually read a dial instead of glancing at a lock screen. A loud alarm clock gets them out of bed without a phone anywhere near the nightstand. A titanium keychain means house keys stop vanishing into the void of a backpack.

We put together this guide with exactly that in mind: gifts that are cool enough to want, sturdy enough to survive a school year, and useful enough that they'll actually get used. Whether you're shopping for a new mechanical watch enthusiast, a kid who just needs a better way to wake up, or anyone stocking a backpack for the year ahead, here's where we'd start.

G-SHOCK x JOSHUA VIDES
COLLABORATION WATCHES

Every school has that kid who draws on everything, and this is the watch for them. G-SHOCK teamed up with artist Joshua Vides, known for his "Reality to Idea" concept, to turn two of the brand's most iconic digital silhouettes — the square DW-5600 and triple-graph DW-6900 — into watches that look like they were lifted straight off a comic book page. Bold, hand-drawn black-and-white outlines wrap around the case, dial, bezel, and band, creating the illusion that the watch itself is a sketch rather than a solid object. It's the kind of piece that gets noticed in a hallway between classes, and every kid who sees it is going to ask where it's from. Underneath the artwork, it's still a real G-SHOCK: shock-resistant construction, 200-meter water resistance, a five-year battery, and a Super Illuminator backlight with a custom "cone" motif that lights up when activated. Each piece also gets a custom case back engraving and comes in special collector's packaging. At $180, it's a genuinely artsy, conversation-starting watch that can also survive gym class.

TIMEX x WORN & WOUND
 FIELD WATCH W/A TWIST

TIMEX_X_WW_4_STORM_HEADER-v1761946733676.webp__PID:ae3b5aec-daa2-452d-85c7-a763cd2120dd

This is the fourth annual Timex x Worn & Wound collaboration, and it's an easy pick for a first mechanical watch. At $199, it undercuts most mechanical watches by a wide margin, and the compact 37mm stainless steel case with a domed acrylic crystal wears comfortably on a smaller wrist. Inside is a hand-wound Sea-Gull TY6 movement — a great, tactile introduction to actually winding and setting a watch rather than just glancing at a phone. The dial reimagines the classic field watch layout into a layered, sector-style design with railroad-track dividers and italicized numerals, printed in thick C3 lume for genuine low-light visibility. It comes in two colorways: Whirlpool, with indigo and denim tones set off by sky-blue and yellow accents, and Storm, in cooler grays and blues with a pop of red on the seconds hand. Both ship on a 20mm nylon mil-strap, and since that's a standard lug width, it's simple to build out a small strap rotation to match any outfit or mood. Water resistant to 50 meters, this one's built to actually get worn every day, not just admired in a drawer.

NEWGATE DIGITAL CENTRE OF THE EARTH
LCD ALARM CLOCK

If the goal is getting phones out of the bedroom, this is the clock to do it with. The Centre of the Earth Alarm Clock breaks from the standard square or rectangular alarm clock with a spherical, British-designed case that stands 4.3 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide, available in black, white, or yellow acrylic. The LCD display is set back into the sphere, which cuts down on glare and keeps it legible from across the room. It runs a 12- or 24-hour time display along with a digital alarm, snooze function, and even a temperature readout, and it's powered by either the included USB cable or three AAA batteries. It's a genuinely futuristic-looking little object for a desk or nightstand, and at $49, it's a low-cost way to build the habit of waking up to an alarm instead of a phone.

For anyone (or any parent) who already loves a good dive watch, this one's an easy sell. The Mai Modern Rotating Bezel Alarm Clock is styled like a Seiko diver, right down to the luminous paint on the markers and hands, and the newest generation adds a functional rotating bezel so you can time tasks — like, say, a homework session — with a simple twist. It's small enough to sit on a desk next to a monitor or on a nightstand, and it still handles the basics well, with a loud alarm, snooze, and backlight to actually get someone out of bed. It comes in a handful of metallic colorways, including blue, black, silver, and orange, so it's easy to match to whatever watch (or desk setup) it's keeping company with. At $59, it doubles as a genuinely useful study timer and a good-looking little tribute to a dive watch collection in progress.

ULTEM DRAFTTITAN MECHANICAL PENCIL
BY MARATAC, GEN 3

Most kids are carrying whatever pencil is rolling around the bottom of their backpack. This one's a serious upgrade. The DraftTitan is CNC-machined from solid Ultem (PEI), a high-performance polymer known for its durability and heat resistance, giving it a translucent amber finish that looks nothing like a normal school pencil. It houses a standard 2mm lead system with a fully serviceable click-advance mechanism, and the Grade 5 titanium tailcap unscrews to reveal a built-in eraser compartment. At just 5.8 inches long and 0.42 ounces, it disappears into a pencil case, but it's the kind of clean, no-branding, purist EDC piece that's going to get noticed the second it's set down on a desk. Currently $39.95, it's a small gift that reads as a big upgrade, and it's built to actually last through the school year instead of getting lost in a locker.

THE WESN QR KEYCHAIN

WESN_QR_BLACKOUT_header-v1778733494064.webp__PID:e0459dd6-13a8-4418-9a66-28c489bdf9c3

If your kid loses keys the way most of us lose pens, this is the fix. The WESN QR is a two-piece, heat-treated titanium keychain that detaches and reattaches in one motion, one-handed, and holds over 100 pounds of load without budging — meaning it's not going anywhere by accident. It weighs just half an ounce, so it adds essentially zero bulk to a keyring, and both ends have lanyard or ring holes, which makes it easy to separate house keys from a locker key or a bike lock. It comes in natural titanium or a blacked-out finish for something more subdued, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty. At $50, it's the kind of accessory that solves a problem before it happens — once it's on the keyring, you genuinely can't imagine going back to a plain split ring, and it turns into something you find yourself fidgeting with all day.

WORN & WOUND CHARACTERS HAT

WW_SWAG_HAT_SQUARE_007-v1718395113873.webp__PID:9a1c35ae-3ad9-4916-8fbc-49e2b61fb060

Every kid needs a go-to hat for campus, and this one comes with some actual personality. Designed by graphic and product designer Matt Smith-Johnson in a style inspired by vintage comic art, the Characters Hat features one of three embroidered watch characters, each paired with its own catchphrase for watch nerds: the carefree "Good Times," the mustachioed "Stay Golden," or the shades-and-peace-sign "I'm Square Don't Care." It's built as a classic 6-panel dad hat in 100% cotton twill, one size fits all, easily adjustable. Yes, the kids will absolutely call it a dad hat. That's kind of the point. At $32, it's a low-key way to rep the brand and get a laugh out of anyone who's into watches enough to get the joke.

HAVE A NICE TIME TOTE BAG

HANT_FigureTote_header-v1769637763721 (2).webp__PID:4adb7e65-7581-44a7-8683-59815f8da0ff

For the kid who's over backpacks, this tote is a rugged, roomier alternative. It's built from heavyweight, 9.4 oz 100% cotton canvas with a 3.7-inch gusset, giving it real depth for textbooks, a laptop, or a change of clothes for practice after school, and reinforced shoulder straps keep it from sagging under the load. The vintage-inspired watch character graphic gives it a playful, mid-century cartoon look that stands out from the usual plain canvas tote. At 16.5 x 16.5 inches and one size, it's spacious enough to handle a full day's carry, and at $29, it's an easy, durable pick for anyone heading from class to class all year.
