The DUG x Windup Watch Shop Special Edition "California Dial" is the kind of collaboration that only makes sense when both partners know exactly what they're doing. Deutsche Uhrenmanufaktur Glashütte — operating in the storied watchmaking town — brings the Purist platform. Windup, as DUG's exclusive U.S. retail partner, brings the concept: a California Dial configuration that puts the tension between two competing traditions right at the center of the watch. Half Arabic, half Roman numerals on the same dial. It's a historically grounded idea — rooted in the transitional period between Art Deco and military functionalism in the 1940s — with a name that came later, born in California in the 1980s when a local company began refinishing vintage dials in exactly this style.
The 40mm three-part 316L stainless steel case measures 10.95mm thick with a 47.5mm lug-to-lug. The finishing features polished bevels and chamfers played against finely brushed surfaces. A slightly domed double anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial from both sides, and the caseback is also sapphire — a clear window onto the DUG 400's decorated bridges, blued screws, and perlage. The California Dial itself is executed entirely in black and white, right down to the black lume plots on the flange — a deliberate extension of the half-and-half dial concept into the color scheme itself. No date window on this edition, keeping the grainy dial clean and the contrast uninterrupted.
The movement is the DUG 400 — a rhodium-plated automatic caliber based on the Sellita SW400, assembled and regulated by hand in Glashütte to meet the strict requirements of the Glashütte designation of origin. At least 50% of the watch's value must be created within the town limits for "Glashütte S/A" to appear on the dial — a standard that DUG meets and that only a handful of brands in the region can claim at this price. The SW400 is a larger, less common caliber than the more widespread SW200 — 31.6mm versus 26mm — making it a well-matched engine for the Purist's 40mm case. It runs at 4Hz with a 40-hour power reserve, and it looks as good as it functions through the sapphire caseback. The DUG's custom skeletonized, gold plated rotor is precision-made in Glashütte.
