When you work in the watch industry, you’re bound to form some opinions, and when you’ve been in the industry for over a decade, you form some really strong ones. Fueled by these opinions, Zach Weiss set out to form his own independent brand, and OraOrea was conceived. OraOrea (pronounced aura-aur-EE-ya) focuses on contemporary expressions rooted in traditional horological aesthetics; neither futuristic nor nostalgic, but deliberately of the present.
The Coriolis Pointer Date began with a unique concept for an hour display, which they’ve dubbed the oscillating index, featuring Roman numerals that alternate with 18k gold hemispheres decorated around a minute railroad track. The combination of these details results in a bold design element that seamlessly moves the eye about the dial in a clockwise motion. Within its multi-layer design, the dial features an inner date indicator that alternates between Arabic numerals and visual dots, displaying the odd days for the first half of the month, and even days for the latter half. Sculptural hands serve a dual purpose, both indicating the day/time while also serving as a central point of focus and tying the design together. Inside is the Sellita SW386-1, a thin, well-decorated, precisely regulated, Swiss-Made automatic with a central-pointer date. Featuring 25-jewels, hacking, hand-winding, a power reserve of approximately 56 hours, and a frequency of 28,800bph, it’s a high-quality and reliable movement, finished to Sellita’s highest standard.
The Coriolis Pointer Date will debut in three distinct colorways: Skyline Silver, Venetus Teal, and Dark Rhodium. Skyline Silver features a pale silver base with circular brushing for a subtle metallic sheen, a vibrant PVD teal oscillating index that shifts from near black to electric blue in direct light, and yellow 18k gold hemispheres provide warmth. The hands combine silver, gold, and teal for contrast and clarity. Venetus Teal, from a Latin term meaning sea-colored, is a soothing teal that leans toward blue with a veiled green undertone. A calm base with circular brushing is accented by a polished silver oscillating index, 18k yellow gold hemispheres, and a medium gray date index. Polished gold and silver-toned hands stand out against the surface while adding a refined brightness. Dark Rhodium features rhodium plating with circular brushing for a metallic sheen. The dark surface is paired with a polished silver oscillating index, 18k white gold hemispheres, and a medium gray date index for a monochromatic look. The hands are polished silver tone, except for the pointer date, which is rendered in rose gold as a point of contrast. As a part of this initial release, the first 100 units of each colorway will also feature an “OraOrea Founder’s Club” engraved rotor.
While the dial captures immediate attention, the Coriolis reveals its depth through a meticulously crafted 38.5mm x 45mm 316L steel case. Designed to highlight sophisticated finishing techniques, its dimensions ensure it remains a versatile companion for daily wear, offering visual intrigue from every perspective. The sculptural hands do more than just facilitate effortless time-telling; they act as a central anchor for the multi-layered dial, while the pointer date provides a functional yet modern graphic touch. To complete the ensemble, each timepiece is paired with a 20mm Italian vegetable-tanned leather strap, hand-stitched and secured by a bespoke buckle.
OraOrea delivers contemporary expressions grounded in classic horological aesthetics. Eschewing both the futuristic and the nostalgic, these watches are deliberately of the present. Developed with a keen designer's sensibility and a collector's discerning eye, the brand pursues those elusive qualities that transform a timepiece into a permanent fixture rather than a transitory phase.
