Many of us are guilty of it: in an entire collection, every last dial will be monochrome. White here, black there, and a dash of silver or grey mixed in. If one is particularly daring, there may even be a dark blue dial added in. But versatility isn’t everything — sometimes, a bright, in-your-face dial is the perfect antidote to a grey day.
Watch dials have historically been places of decoration. Painted enamel dials were popular in the nineteenth century, with such vivid imagery as landscapes, battles, and hunting scenes adorning them. Though neglected through the early twentieth century, the colorful dial — now in more vibrant bursts of color — saw a vivid return in the mid-twentieth century when companies were scrambling to produce new timekeepers for the burgeoning underwater sport of SCUBA diving.
A colorful dial can signal the change in seasons. For many, a bright dial immediately conjures images of sunny vacations, warm water, and worn paperbacks, while a muted dial can be the perfect companion during bleak midwinters, perfectly accenting the changed environment. A well-chosen dial can also inject color into both your collection and wardrobe, providing the right accent piece and adding the missing link in an otherwise perfect outfit.
In this week’s Chronicle, we’re looking at some of our favorite colorful dials for those occasions when nothing else will do. As always, the Windup Watch Team is available via consultation to answer any questions you have. In addition, all of these products are eligible for free domestic shipping across the US.
Fun Colorful Dials
Integrated affordability!
These watches come in an array of colors to brighten your day. With vibrant dials that feature luminous plots, hour and minute hands with a sunburst pattern. The date wheel at three is magnified by a piece of sapphire glass. And all of this is within a curvaceous and sharp edged case that comes in at 40mm with a svelte 11.7mm thickness. But the experience doesn't stop there. The case extends to a tapered bracelet, with polished center links, that integrate perfectly into the overall design. That leads to a stamped clasp that sits opposite a display case-back showing off the Miyota 8210 powering these offerings. Since on display, Citizen has spruced up the movement with a gold toned rotor and plate.

Sunflower combines sandy yellow tones with rusty orange and dark teal to evoke the late summer blooming flower. Combined with a grass green mil-strap, the desaturated tones are both natural and stylish. Sunset evokes the deep magentas seen as the sun descends across the horizon. A deep magenta dial is offset by brighter blues and flecks of pink. A striped blue and teal nylon mil-strap adds contrast an a slightly sporty attitude.
New size, same toughness!
The newest timepieces to the collection features a smaller, versatile 37mm stainless steel case, complete with an easy-grip dive bezel and screw-down crown at 4 o’clock, with the bold design secured to the wrist via a soft polyurethane strap. The striking dials features oversized hands and applied markers that add to its high legibility, while multi colored accents and a bright luminous material ensure sleek styling and quick readability to even the deepest depths. At the 4 o’clock position is a thoughtful date window, adding another element of functionality to this all-purpose diver. Maintaining the robust standards of the Promaster Collection, the timepiece is water resistant up to 200 meters.
Iconic Timepiece Reimagined
One of the most notable features of the Jet Star is its turtle-shaped case; an original design element carefully chosen from the brand's archive and updated to a contemporary 40mm angular shape. The stainless steel case also features a domed sapphire crystal and a vivid sunburst dial, which is accentuated by a contrasting chapter ring, hour markers, and bold hands. Luminescent plots at each hour and fill-in hands provide exceptional legibility in any environment. Additionally, the dial's original colors from that era feature a captivating and dramatic dégradé effect that makes it stand out from the crowd.
An integrated icon from the past!
Featuring a stainless 35mm steel case with a mix of expertly executed brushed and polished surfaces, the PRX has a classic barrel shape with faceted sides that cleanly flow into a tapering bracelet or rubber strap. A short 35mm length, 10.9mm height, and integrated bracelet design allow for a comfortable fit on small wrists and will appeal to those who prefer a smaller size in general. The dial features lume-filled batons on top of a textured surface in a variety of colors for a classic and attractive look. Riding the line between dress and sport, the Tissot PRX is a versatile watch that can be worn for any occasion.
A pop of color for your wrist!
The Modul watch is a collection of compact and slim timepieces that have a bold color palette and a sleek tonneau-shaped case. Each watch makes use of a 35mm wide, 8.2mm case that features a modular design. The black steel body houses the movement, distinct from the brushed steel outer case. This allows for different movement calibers to be accommodated, thus leading to a quartz and mechanical version of each Modul. The clear differentiator between the two being the small seconds sub dial used on the mechanical version while the quartz version features a simple 3 hand layout.
Refined casual timepiece and vintage-inspired
Featuring a 38mm case with mixed brushed and polished surfaces, the Big Crown Pointer Date is a modern take on a vintage aesthetic. The beautiful finishing is set off by the rounded, coin-edge bezel, which speaks strongly to early 20th-century pilot’s watches. Similarly, the cathedral hour and minute hands add to the antique charm. The dial is then a series of indexes featuring a thin, elegant typeface. The namesake complication stands out along the outer edge of the dial, providing a unique and highly legible date presentation.
A companion given any adventure’s on the horizon
The M-40 model of the Marinemaster is 40mm at the diameter and 43mm from lug-to-lug. It strikes a similar silhouette to the M-44, but in a scaled down package. The case is rated 300m water resistant and features a uni-directional, 120-click elapsed time bezel. Furthermore, details from the dial are carried over to the rubber horizon strap. Optionally, you can equip your Marinemaster with a stainless steel block bracelet.
