One of the most instantly recognizable watch style thanks in part to their typically oversized crowns and highly legible dial design languages, pilot style watches, or fliegers as they are sometimes referred, can trace their true origins back to the early 1900s when a new style of timekeeper was created for German military aviators. The dials were large with a clear focus on instant legibility, the extending sword hands turned blue and treated with luminous material, and of course the onion crown was selected for its ease of use even when being manipulated by hands laden with thick leather fighting gloves. While most of us can not claim to have a need for all of these specific features, that still doesn't stop us from searching out more refined pilot style offerings for the benefits that they still offer.
