When you work in the watch industry, you’re bound to form some opinions, and when you’ve been in the industry for over a decade, you form some really strong ones. Fueled by these opinions, Zach Weiss set out to form his own independent brand, and OraOrea was conceived. OraOrea (pronounced aura-aur-EE-ya) focuses on contemporary expressions rooted in traditional horological aesthetics; neither futuristic nor nostalgic, but deliberately of the present.

The Coriolis Pointer Date began with a unique concept for an hour display which they’ve dubbed the oscillating index. Featuring Roman numerals that alternate with 18k gold hemispheres decorated around a minute railroad track. The combination of these details results in a bold design element that seamlessly moves the eye about the dial in a clock wise motion. Within its multi-layer design, the dial features an inner date indicator which alternates between Arabic numerals and visual dots, displaying the odd days for the first half of the months, and even days for the latter half. Sculptural hands swerve dual purpose, both indicating the day / time while also serving as a central point of focus and tying the design together. Inside is the Sellita SW386-1, a thin, well-decorated, precisely regulated, Swiss-Made automatic with a central-pointer date. Featuring 25-jewels, hacking, hand-winding, a power reserve of approximately 56 hours, and a frequency of 28,800bph, it’s a high-quality and reliable movement.

The Casio Edifice EFK-110D is a proper second act that addresses the things people wanted, without touching what was already working. The original EFK-100D (39mm) made a genuine case for Casio's entry into mechanical watchmaking: well-finished, well-sized, priced under $300, and powered by a dependable Japanese automatic movement. The EFK-110D takes that foundation and tightens it in every direction that matters; smaller case, slimmer profile, shorter lug-to-lug, a new movement, and a date window that's moved from 6 o'clock to 3 o'clock.

The stainless steel case comes in at 38mm across and 11.8mm thick with a 43mm lug-to-lug — down from 39mm, 12.5mm, and 43.5mm respectively on the EFK-100D. Those aren't dramatic numbers on paper, but a 0.7mm reduction brings the Edifice into range for wrists that found the original slightly too tall. The case finishing carries over with a combination of mirror-polished and hairline-brushed surfaces that gave the original its visual depth. Inside, the original Seiko NH35 has been exchanged for the Miyota 8215, a 21-jewel Japanese automatic operating at 21,600 bph with a 42-hour power reserve, manual-wind capability, and hacking seconds.

NOT ANOTHER WATCH!

While some might rejoice in the subtle ritual of winding and setting a watch that hasn’t been worn, others would prefer to have a second watch, fully wound and ready to go at a moment's notice. For the latter group of people, we’d recommend taking a look at our collection of winders from Mainspring London. Designed to keep an additional watch wound and running, the Guardian Single-slot winder features a bi-directional motor capable of clockwise and counter clockwise rotation, ensuring your selected watch is wound appropriately. With its single cushion design and exposed front panel, it can fit watches up to 60mm in diameter meaning even some of the largest watches on the market can fit. With seven distinct color options, we’re sure there’s one for you.

The Forsta from WESN might be their first take on a wallet, but one thing’s clear: they’ve done their homework. Crafted from a singular piece of Swedish vegetable-tanned leather, it’s cut and crafted into a bi-fold wallet, finished with two sets of stitches. The layout is straightforward: four card pockets — two partially covered in the front, two behind — handle 1 to 16 cards without the wallet bloating. Behind those sits the Junk Drawer: a cash compartment with room for folded bills or coins. Closed dimensions are 3.5 inches by 2.8 inches at 0.27 inches thick, opening to 5.5 inches flat. Over time, the leather will age and develop a unique patina, crafted by the wear and tear of your daily use.

DEAL OF THE WEEK

As longtime Seiko fans, we couldn’t resist the Mai alarm clocks. Styled to look like classic Seiko dive watches, they even have luminous paint to match. Paying homage to some of their most iconic models, like the 007, Turtle, Samurai, and more, you can either match the watch on your wrist or find a new style for your room. With this new generation of Mai alarm clocks, Seiko incorporated a functional, uni-directional bezel that functions just like the watch. On the rear of the clock, one knob allows you to set the time and alarm function while a dedicated switch controls the alarm function. At the top of the clock, the “crown” serves as both a snooze button and a momentary switch to illuminate the dial with subtle LEDs.
