A good timepiece is more than just a tool, or a venue for personal expression, or a piece of mechanical artwork. A good watch is a companion, a daily compatriot on whatever adventure life may throw at you. Since their inception in 2008, Raven Watches has strived to create rugged, dependable companion timepieces that can handle anything that comes their way while developing their own clean, field-inspired design.
The Overland Park, Kansas-based brand has punched far above their weight in terms of technology, with previous offerings including heavy-duty features like helium escape valves, ratcheting diver’s clasps, tritium tubes and one piece, the Deep Tech, with a nigh-unbelievable 2,500 meter water resistance rating. This durability-first, heavily engineered approach, coupled with excellent automatic movements from ETA and Miyota make Raven a fantastic value for the adventurer in need of a steadfast partner in their travels.
Steve Laughlin, the founder of Raven Watches, is an explorer and and outdoorsman at heart. Since graduating from the Kansas State University with a degree in Visual Arts in 1999, Laughlin has traveled the world seeking adventure, usually with a camera in hand. This drive to capture every moment, no matter how difficult, has taken him from the Great Plains to Hawaii, Korea, Australia, Vietnam, Thailand and his designs for Raven reflect that adventurous streak.
Laughlin himself notes that his inspiration to create timepieces sprung from a revelation about this lifestyle, saying in his own words that “I started noticing that scientists, explorers, the people who actually go out and do stuff- they all wear interesting watches. With the Raven brand, I wanted to create something for those doers.” With their impressive level of craftsmanship and innovative design, it’s safe to say Raven succeeded.
