New Seiko Mai Clocks, and Spring-ready Watches From Timex and BOLDR
Words by Windup Watch Shop

Spring is just around the corner, and after a fairly brisk winter in NYC, we’re ready for it. Conveniently the newest batch of watches from Timex and BOLDR are ready for the warmer weather. But first, as the title promised, some new Seiko Mai desk clocks.

Oh, Mai

It’s pretty obvious that we’re all big fans of Seiko watches, so it should come as no surprise that their diver-styled desk clocks are popular as well. At $45 these table-top alarm clocks are a fun reminder of your favorite Seiko refs, while also conveniently telling the time. On top of the four original colors, we just added three new versions that share even more in style with watches.

First is Black/Gold, which gets a subtle gilt treatment on the hands and bezel. It’s very classy. Next is the Black/Gray option. This one has a two-tone dial and a slightly aged look to the markers for a vintage feel. Lastly is Blue/Red. Yep, the “Pepsi” bezel made its way to a desk clock and we love it. Pick one up here.

Timexes for All Occasions

Who doesn’t love a good field watch? Adventure ready, highly legible, understated, they are easy go-to watches no matter the situation. The only challenge is which to get. Well, Timex has you covered with a new range of nicely specced options from the Expedition North Field Post Solar line, ranging three sizes and two movements.

First, are the solars. You’ve got two size options here, 36mm and 41mm, to suit your wrist size and personal preference. 36mm is classic and extremely nimble, while 41mm is modern and bold. Both sizes feature 100m of water resistance and sapphire crystals, so you can’t really go wrong. Especially at $159.

Next, are the hand-wound mechanicals in 38mm. At $229, these are probably some of the best price mechanical field watches out there, and they feature 100m of water resistance and sapphire crystals, just like their solar cousins. Available in crisp white or bold blue, these are fun, handsome, and ready for the outdoors.

So, that’s all well and good if you’re looking for adventure, but what if you just want a great casual, everyday watch to wear? Well, the new Waterbury Traditional Automatic 39mm has got you covered. These perfectly sized timepieces sport handsome brushed metal dials with applied markers and lumed hands, making legibility not an issue, as well as day/date complications. Available in dark blue or bright silver, at $259 these are a great, value-packed option.

But, if you’re looking for something with a bit more vintage flair, we recommend the Q Timex 1978 Reissue Date 35mm. From the subtly brushed dial to the key-hole date window to the massive acrylic crystal, this watch just exudes retro charm. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if they got mistaken for actual vintage pieces. Look like a million bucks for only $169.

What’s Bolder than Bold? BOLDR Supply Co.

It’s not surprising that BOLDR has continued to build off of their Venture field watch format. It’s a winner. With modern-styled 38mm titanium cases that feature 200m of water resistance and sapphire crystals, not to mention automatic movements and sub $500 price tags (even sub $300 at times) they are value packed and ready for anything. Today, we’ve got two collaborations to show you, and some new summery colors of the Wayfarer.

For the Kraken, BOLDR teamed up with Nitecore for an EDC fans dream combo. Not only do you get the watch, which is a blacked out version of the Venture with a 60-click bi-directional 12-hour bezel, big dive markers in warm lume tones, and a dial with a cool topographical texture, you also get a Nitecore TIKI light. To make it even better (yes, better!) the TIKI has been fit with a UV flashlight, letting you charge up your lume in an instant. This one is limited and going fast, $449.

Next are the similar, but also quite different Five in a Row models. Made in collaboration with Five in a Row, a Scottish-rowing crew that competed in the 2021 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge (TWAC). They rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua in 2-hour shifts, 24 hours a day. While an amazing feat unto itself, they also did in the name of a good cause, raising awareness for Reverse Rett, a UK-based charity that supports those afflicted by Rett Syndrome. 15% of the proceeds from the sales of this watch will go to that charity as well.

This duo features 12-hour bezels with a cool bi-color tide indicator design, and a crown up at 10 for added comfort when rowing or doing other strenuous activities. The dials are bold and clear, and come in either full lume or dark gray. These are also limited, $399.

Our last Venture-based additions are two new colors of the Wayfarer line, which add a 24-hour sub-dial into the mix. A nice extra complication, but what is going to take you attention here are the amazing new colors. Admiral Blue and Tangerine both mix warm khaki tones with interesting colors for a result that is somehow preppy, nautical, and makes you want to grab an ice pop and stroll along the beach. Perfect for the coming warmer months and well-priced at $339.

For the sake of argument, what if you don’t want or, even better, already have a Venture? Well, then you should check out the Odyssey Freediver. The 40mm steel diver boasts 300m of water resistance and a Miyota 9015 movement wrapped in an aggressive, modern design. New for Spring 2022 are some fun, bright colored dials with matching dates and tropic-style rubber straps. Pick from Frost White, Citrus Orange, or the unforgettable Mint Green. $519 makes one of the highly capable divers yours.
