Aviation Day Gift Guide
Windup Watch Shop - August 17, 2026

Aviation Day lands on August 19th, marking the birthday of Orville Wright and, more broadly, a celebration of everything that's kept us fascinated with flight since 1903. It's also, conveniently, one of the best excuses on the calendar to shop pilot's watches. Few categories in watchmaking carry as much genuine history: slide-rule bezels built for mid-air calculations, GMT hands for tracking a second timezone at altitude, and lume bright enough to read a dial in a darkened cockpit. These aren't just watches that look the part, they were built to do a job.
We pulled together some of our favorite pilot's watches in the shop right now, spanning everything from an approachable Citizen on sale for under $500 to a serious Oris altimeter watch built for actual high-altitude use. Whether you're shopping for the aviation enthusiast in your life or just looking for an excuse to add a new pilot's watch to your own collection, there's something here for it. And if you want to talk through any of these in person, our sales team is always happy to help, whether that's a call, a virtual consultation, or a visit to our Brooklyn showroom. We'll be honest: there are sometimes some amazing deals to be found in person that don't make it online, so it's worth the trip if you're in the area.
LACO FRANKFURT GMT
40MM (2026)

Laco has been building Flieger watches since 1925, and the Frankfurt GMT is their modern, aggressive take on that heritage, now resized to a more wearable 40mm for 2026. The dark, matte bead-blasted steel case houses dual crowns, one for the time and one for the internal 24-hour bezel, letting you track a second timezone at a glance. Inside is a Swiss-made Sellita 330-2 automatic movement with 25 jewels, a 42-hour power reserve, date, and hacking seconds, all visible through the classic pilot dial design with exceptional lume for night flights. It's rated to 200 meters of water resistance under a sapphire crystal, and comes in either black or grey dial. At $2,220, it's a serious, historically grounded pilot's watch from one of the original German Flieger manufacturers.
SHOP NOWBULOVA LUNAR PILOT BLACK HOLE — 98A335

Inspired by deep space rather than the cockpit, this is the first Lunar Pilot chronograph offered in 41mm, and it goes all-in on a blacked-out aesthetic. The 41.2mm stainless steel case is black ion-plated with a matte finish, offset by a bright polished bezel and pushers, while the six-hand chronograph dial is coated in Musou paint that absorbs 99.4% of light. Three recessed sub-dials handle a 1/20-second chronograph counter, running seconds, and a 60-minute counter, all powered by Bulova's proprietary 262kHz high-performance quartz movement for accuracy rated to within seconds a year. It's rated to 100 meters, closes on a matching black bracelet, and this limited edition ships in a special Black Hole box complete with a travel case and a matching Bulova clock. At $1,650, it's a striking, technically impressive piece for anyone who wants their pilot's watch to look like it came from another galaxy.
SHOP NOWAVI-8 CVRT 3775A

The CVRT (pronounced "covert") blends field, pilot, and dive influences into one compact 37.75mm tool watch. A hard-coated stainless steel case and flat sapphire crystal back up 100 meters of water resistance, while the matte black dial uses raised C3 Super-LumiNova numerals and a chapter ring calibrated to 1/5th of a second for genuine legibility. Inside is the reliable Miyota 9015 automatic movement, offering hacking seconds, a quick-set date, and a 42-hour power reserve. It comes with two straps in the box, a fitted black rubber strap for a modern look and a ribbed nylon mil-strap for breathability, so you can switch it up depending on the day. At $450, it's a well-rounded, purpose-built option for anyone who wants a pilot's watch that can also pull double duty as an everyday tool watch.
SHOP NOWAVI-8 FLYBOY EAGKE SQUADRON
AUTO BRONZE 85TH LIMITED EDITION

This one comes with a genuinely great story attached. It commemorates the 85th anniversary of the Eagle Squadrons, the American volunteer pilots who flew for the RAF before the U.S. officially entered WWII. The 39mm solid bronze case will develop its own unique patina over time, and the dial hides a secret inscription, "First from the eyries / For liberty / Let us to the battle," that only reveals itself under UV light. It's available in three squadron-specific colorways: Gravesend with a black sunburst dial, Southend with blue, and Coltishall with green, each limited to just 175 pieces. Powering it all is the Miyota 8215 automatic movement, visible through a sapphire exhibition case back engraved with the squadron's eagle emblem and a unique edition number. At $450, it's a rare, well-told piece of aviation history for a collector who appreciates the backstory as much as the watch.
SHOP NOWORIS PROPILOT DATE (2025)

Oris took its long-running ProPilot line and gave it a clean, modern refresh for 2025 without losing the aviation DNA. The 41mm stainless steel case pairs sharper lines with a turbine-inspired fluted bezel and an oversized crown, while the textured dial (available in Black, Chalk, or Moss) keeps applied Arabic numerals and lume-tipped hands easy to read at a glance. It runs on the in-house Oris Calibre 733, a Swiss automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, hacking seconds, and quick-set date, all protected by a domed sapphire crystal rated to 100 meters. Choose between a suede leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet, both finished with Oris's "LIFT" folding clasp and a tool-free micro-adjust system for dialing in the perfect fit. At $2,350, it's the kind of pilot's watch that genuinely works as an everyday piece, cockpit or otherwise.
SHOP NOWBULOVA LUNAR PILOT
TIMASCUS X THIAGO ROSINHOLE
LIMITED EDITION

Released for Bulova's 150th anniversary, this one pairs the brand's iconic Lunar Pilot chronograph with Brazilian artist Thiago Rosinhole for something genuinely one-of-a-kind. The dial is Timascus, titanium folded through the Damascus process, so no two watches share the exact same pattern. It's housed in a 43.5mm stainless steel case with a blue tachymeter ring and matching chronograph pushers, powered by Bulova's high-frequency 262kHz quartz movement for a smoothly sweeping chronograph hand accurate to 1/20th of a second. The case back is individually numbered and engraved with Rosinhole's Budii character, and the whole thing ships in special packaging with a Budii storybook and a 6-inch collectible figurine. Limited to 5,500 pieces worldwide, this is priced at $1,650 and makes for a genuinely fun, artistic collector's piece with real chronograph chops underneath.
SHOP NOWJUNGHANS MEISTER PILOT AUTOMATIC

Junghans has been making pilot watches since supplying cockpit clocks to the German air force in the 1950s, and the Meister Pilot channels that heritage directly. The 43.3mm stainless steel case wears a striking dark green dial with oversized Arabic numerals, a small seconds sub-dial with a red accent hand, and a bi-directional rotating bezel topped with a luminous dot for tracking elapsed time. It's powered by the in-house Junghans J800.1 automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve, water resistant to 100 meters, and finished on a green and black leather strap. Priced at $2,510 and shipping free worldwide, it's a distinctive, German-made pilot's watch for someone who wants something a little different from the usual black-dial crowd.
SHOP NOWROBOT ALBATROS MANUAL WIND 8-DAY POWER RESERVE

This is a mechanical tribute to the Aero L-39 jet trainer, a Cold War-era Czech aircraft known for its precision handling, and it wears that inspiration on its sleeve. The 44mm 904L stainless steel case surrounds a matte grey dial modeled after the L-39's instrument panel, complete with yellow-accented numerals and hands shaped to echo the aircraft's silhouette. A power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock tracks an impressive 192-hour (8-day) reserve from the Swiss-made ROBOT/La Joux-Perret FS10 manual-wind movement, visible through a sapphire case back. It's rated to 100 meters and comes on a tri-color NATO-style textile strap lined with leather. At $5,570, it's a bold, story-rich piece for a serious collector who wants something outside the usual pilot's watch playbook.
SHOP NOWCITIZEN PROMASTER
NAVIHAWK 40MM

For over 35 years, Citizen's Promaster line has built genuinely useful tool watches, and the Navihawk is its pilot's watch entry, now resized to a more wearable 40mm. The slide-rule bezel is designed to actually help with in-flight calculations, paired here with a full chronograph for good measure, all rated to an impressive 200 meters of water resistance. It's available in silver, khaki green, or salmon dials, the latter two with a DLC-coated bezel, each on a matching stainless steel bracelet. Power comes from Citizen's Eco-Drive B620 movement, which runs on light rather than batteries and holds a charge for at least six months once fully powered. Currently on sale for $445 (down from $595) and backed by a 5-year warranty, it's the most accessible pick in this guide without cutting corners on genuine pilot's watch functionality.
SHOP NOWORIS PROPILOT ALTIMETER

This is the serious, go-anywhere pick in the lineup. The ProPilot Altimeter pairs a mechanical automatic movement with a genuine crown-operated altimeter function, letting you read real-time altitude whether you're actually in the air or just hiking somewhere with real elevation change. The 47mm case is built from multi-piece carbon fiber and titanium with a grey PVD finish, tough enough to back up its adventure-ready design, and it's rated to 100 meters under a double-domed sapphire crystal. Inside is the Oris 793, based on the SW 300-1 automatic movement, with a 56-hour power reserve. It's finished on a green textile strap with a PVD-plated folding clasp. At $6,800, it's a genuine instrument watch for someone who wants their pilot's watch to actually do a pilot's job.
