After World War II in 1945, Arde Bulova (the son of Bulova’s Founder) founded the Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking. This new school was intended to offer disabled veterans a tuition-free means to master watchmaking skills and eventually provide dedicated job placement. Just one year after its doors opened, the first class graduated and entered the workforce as skilled watchmakers. During its 50-plus-year history, over 1500 jewelers pledged to hire graduates before the school closed in 2000. In 2017, a retired Baltimore police officer and Swiss-trained master watchmaker established the Veterans Watchmaking Initiative with a similar doctrine in mind. Recognizing the opportunity to pay homage to the original school while giving back, Bulova became the founding sponsor of this new program.

The Bulove Military VWI Special Edition Chronograph is a direct result of their collaboration with the Veteran Watchmaker’s Initiative (VWI), blending modern movement technology with vintage design inspiration. The watch features a 42.5mm silver-tone stainless steel cushion case topped with a distinct coin-edge fluted bezel. The military green dial features a six-handed, tri-compax layout with dedicated sub dials for running seconds, 1/20th seconds, and 60-minute indicators, as well as a discreet date window located at the 6 o’clock position. Luminous accents on the dial and main hands ensure you can read the time in any low-light environment you might encounter. This watch comes paired with a 22mm saddle brown leather strap, complementing its modern and vintage aesthetics.

This special edition chronograph is powered by Bulova’s NP20 movement, a high-performance quartz movement, the very same movement you’d find inside a modern Lunar Pilot. Operating at a frequency of 262 kHz (eight times higher than a standard quartz), this movement's accuracy is measured in seconds-per-year rather than seconds-per-month. Due to this high frequency, you’ll notice that both the chronograph seconds hand and the small running seconds appear to have a smooth sweep.
